Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez revealed Monday the reason why she will not pursue the top Democratic role on the House Oversight Committee.

The New York congresswoman told reporters, “It’s actually clear to me that the underlying dynamics in the caucus have not shifted with respect to seniority as much as I think would be necessary, so I believe I’ll be staying put at Energy and Commerce.”

Her decision comes amid the race to replace Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia, who is stepping down from the ranking member position on the Oversight Committee for health reasons. Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive, was seen as a potential contender after narrowly losing a bid for the same post last year.

Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas said last week that “she is ready to shine a light on the very dark things taking place in our country under this administration” when asked about a potential run for the party’s top Oversight Committee role.
