Key Ravens Defensive Starter Unexpectedly Ruled Out for Week 2 vs Browns

The Baltimore Ravens have already ruled out two players — tight end Isaiah Likely and fullback Patrick Ricard — for their Week 2 matchup against the Cleveland Browns, and on Sunday, another starter was surprisingly ruled out too.

The Ravens are coming off a heartbreaking 41-40 loss to the Buffalo Bills, in which they surrendered three touchdowns and a field goal in the fourth quarter, including blowing a 16-point lead in the final seven minutes of the game.

While Baltimore’s Week 2 opponent, the Cleveland Browns, certainly don’t have as dynamic an offense as the Bills, defending Joe Flacco, Jerry Jeudy, Quinshon Judkins, and company got a little more difficult on Sunday when NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport announced cornerback Jaire Alexander won’t be playing in the Week 2 matchup.

“#Ravens CB Jaire Alexander, who has no injury status but is still working his way back from a previous knee issue, will be inactive today. Another week to get right,” Rapoport wrote on X.

Despite missing a month during training camp while recovering from a knee injury, Alexander, 28, played in the Ravens’ season opener, totaling 30 coverage snaps and logging three tackles while allowing three catches on three targets for 83 yards and a 118.8 passer rating against, per Pro Football Focus.

He also was beat in coverage on Buffalo’s final drive that set up its game-winning field goal.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh admitted to reporters during the week that Alexnader’s injury wasn’t preventing him from playing, but he wasn’t quite where they wanted him to be.

“The main thing right now is just to get him right,” Harbaugh said. “He’s healthy enough, but we have to get him right so we can go out there and play like Jaire Alexander, which I fully expect him to do. We’ll just give him an opportunity to do that.”

Alexander’s absence puts more pressure on fellow cornerbacks Nate Wiggins, Marlon Humphrey, and Chidobe Awuzie, who played a combined 169 coverage snaps in Week 1, allowing 15 receptions on 20 targets for 152 yards.
