The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly been trying to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado for the last few months. But Arenado has a no-trade clause, so putting together a deal has been tough.

MLB insider Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently suggested the Cardinals could trade Arenado to the Detroit Tigers in a shocking deal. Arenado has reportedly cleared a trade to six teams, and the Tigers aren’t one of them.

Here’s the full trade pitched by Bowden to send Arenado to Detroit:

• Detroit Tigers receive: 3B Nolan Arenado
• St. Louis Cardinals receive: RHP Josh Randall, 3B Carson Rucker

“Arenado has a full no-trade clause and has not indicated he would accept a move to the Motor City,” Bowden wrote. “However, perhaps the eight-time All-Star would reconsider the opportunity to join Detroit, a playoff team with one of the best and deepest five-man rotations in MLB.

“Arenado, 34, is having a solid season, batting .254/.341/.402 (108 OPS+) with nine doubles and three homers. He is still a strong defender at third base, ranking in the 92nd percentile in outs above average, which measures range. His veteran leadership would also be invaluable to the Tigers, who have a young roster.”

If Arenado were to clear a deal to the Tigers, this makes a lot of sense.

Detroit was reportedly heavily in the running to sign third baseman Alex Bregman but came up short. Acquiring Arenado would be the next best thing to help the Tigers steal the division.

Still, none of this matters if the Cardinals’ veteran infielder won’t clear his no-trade clause for the Tigers.
