Owner Returns Home to Destroyed Couch, but Dog’s Smile Denies Everything

A dog desperately trying to mask his bad behavior went viral on TikTok with more than 6.2 million views.

Pet parent Jenna Coppolino returned home to find one of the couch cushions ripped to shreds. The cover gone. The stuffing thrown all over the floor. And the cushion mauled. Sitting in front of the mess sat her rescue dog, Kenny.

In her clip posted to her account, @jennacoppolino, Kenny looked up at her with a giant, toothy grin and his tail wagging at the speed of light. He tried playing it cool that the destruction wasn’t because of him. He thought smiling through the incident would remove the blame from him, but Coppolino knows he suffers from separation anxiety, and this had his name written all over it.

Separation anxiety in dogs is a behavioral disorder that causes extreme distress when the animals are separated from their owner or when they are left alone. As a result, dogs might exhibit destructive behavior, excess barking, restlessness or urination and defecation.

“Kenny was a rescue, and we knew he had really bad separation anxiety,” she told Newsweek via TikTok. “Of course, some days were worse than others! We knew almost every time we came home, something was going to be destroyed.”

While the mess of destruction can be frustrating, it is a learning process for dogs to overcome their separation anxiety. But thinking on the bright side, Coppolino said Kenny’s behavior has been better since rescuing him in June.

The incident from the video occurred soon after she brought him home, but now, she calls him “the best boy.” Plus, she mentioned in the video’s comment section that Kenny’s smile makes it hard to be mad at him.

As of Tuesday, the TikTok video had more than 6.2 million views, 1.2 million likes and 2,774 comments. Users quickly defended Kenny’s actions, calling him innocent and taking the blame.

“It was me, no shade, don’t be mad at him, it was my idea,” said one viewer.

“He found it like that,” wrote a second person, while another asked: “So did he see the guy who came in and made that mess?”

A fourth user commented: “He said, ‘Mom, I sorry, I cute, look at me instead.’ Kenny is NOT to blame.”
