In a viral TikTok video, a cat named Sky refuses to use the flap door despite her owner’s effort to get her to come through, and internet users can’t stop laughing at the footage.
The video shared in February under the username @t677740, shows the cat from the United Kingdom staring at her owner from behind the glass door, as if asking her to open it so she can get in.
However, her owner insists that she use the cat flap instead, so she can go in and out of the house as she pleases. “Use the cat flap! Sky! look, mommy is here, come on!” she can be heard saying to the cat.
The poster even pops her hand out of the flap to show Sky the way. But the feline won’t have any of it, and she sits there looking at her confused, meowing, as if telling her to just hurry up and open the door.
If your cat is refusing to use the flap door without an apparent reason you should check that it has easy access to it, and also whether there is a bit of cover nearby, says website Cats Protection, adding that using potted plants works well.
You can train your cat to use the flap but it takes time and patience. First thing you should do is hold the flap open and lure them in with a treat. Then hold the treat to the other side and encourage them to go through.
It is important that you reward your cat often, but with little amount, during this process to avoid overfeeding. Repeat this process as long as necessary, and if it still doesn’t work, a cat behavior specialist may be able to help.
There are different types of flap doors, starting from the simple manually operated one. There are also magnet and infrared operated cat flaps, operated via a device attached to your cat’s collar, which will unlock the door for them.
Microchip cat flaps are another option. They are operated by your cat’s microchip, and they are the best method of preventing other cats from entering your home as the reader only responds to preprogrammed microchips.
