Chiefs’ Travis Kelce Defends Patrick Mahomes After Costly Mistake

The Kansas City Chiefs sit at 0-2 on the season for the first time since Patrick Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback. And on Wednesday, Travis Kelce took accountability for a big mistake that played a massive part in falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2.

Sunday’s Chiefs-Eagles matchup was a back-and-forth affair for much of the game that truly could have gone either way. However, the game entirely swung in the Eagles’ favor after intercepting Mahomes on a pass into the end zone that hit Kelce in the hands, which would have otherwise given the Chiefs a fourth quarter lead had Kelce made the catch.

Instead of a Chiefs touchdown, the Eagles would instead go and score a touchdown of their own on the following possession, taking a 20-10 lead they would not relinquish, coming away with a 20-17 victory.

When you look at the game-changing play in question, it appeared as if Kelce was just coming out of his route, leading some to say that Mahomes threw the pass too early for Kelce to be able to get his head around to see the ball coming his way.

However, when speaking about the play on the latest edition of his “New Heights” podcast alongside his brother, Jason Kelce, Travis took all of the blame for not catching the pass, regardless of the circumstances.

“The ball was where it needed to be when it needed to be there. I just got to get my head around out of the break,” said Kelce. “And I shot you that text telling you that. It’s one of those plays where it happens bang, bang. And I know that’s the window that it needs to be in. I know it’s coming out of armpits and ear holes of the offense and defensive line getting their hands up. And I just got to be able to get my head around right so that I don’t put myself in a position to let the ball surprise me like that.”

It’s certainly rare to see Kelce and Mahomes clearly not operating on the same kind of timing offensively, given how great the chemistry the two have played with throughout their careers.

Regardless of who is to blame for the play, the Chiefs’ offense in totality has not looked anything resembling the team that made it to the Super Bowl just last year.

If the Chiefs are going to turn things around, a matchup against the New York Giants on Sunday, who are also 0-2 on the season, certainly seems like a game that they need to win. So expect Kelce and Mahomes to do everything in their power to learn from and improve on their rather lackluster start to the season.
