The Pittsburgh Pirates officially released left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney, per MLB’s transactions log.

Heaney was designated for assignment on Aug. 26. He then cleared waivers and was released by the team.

Heaney was 5-10 this season with a 5.39 ERA, 84 strikeouts and 1.363 WHIP across 120.1 innings pitched.

The southpaw was a regular in the Pirates’ starting rotation, but was moved to the bullpen earlier this month amid his ongoing struggles on the mound.

Manager Don Kelly told reporters Heaney was willing to make the move.

“He’s totally open to it, helping the team in any way possible,” Kelly said. “Just trying to put him in a good spot, too, to help us win a game.”

Heaney made two appearances out of the bullpen for the Pirates. His last outing was nightmarish as he allowed five earned runs and could not finish the inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Aug. 25.

The left-hander had a strong start to the season, sporting a 3.33 ERA across 78.1 innings of work in his first 14 starts. He also recorded 59 strikeouts to 24 walks.

Things took a turn in mid-June, where Heaney allowed 43 earned runs (including 13 home runs) across 42 innings. He was sporting a 9.21 ERA during that stretch.

The Pirates currently have a four-man rotation, which features right-handers Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Mike Burrows and Johan Oviedo.

As for Heaney, he will now look for a new home.

Heaney signed a one-year, $5.25 million deal with the Pirates late in the offseason, on Feb. 22. The Pirates kept the left-hander at the July 31 trade deadline despite his expiring contract, but ultimately chose to part ways with the pitcher by the end of the summer.

The veteran began his big league career with the Miami Marlins, making his MLB debut with the ballclub in 2014. Heaney has featured for a number of teams throughout his lengthy career, including the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The left-hander spent the longest time with the Halos, donning their uniform for over six seasons before being dealt at the deadline to the Yankees in 2021.

The lowest mark of Heaney’s career came in 2022 with the Dodgers, when he sported a 3.10 ERA across 72.2 innings before being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Hopefully, Heaney’s next team can help him return to that same form.
