Colts Could Trade Anthony Richardson to Struggling AFC Opponent

The Indianapolis Colts made a rather surprising decision at quarterback on Tuesday, opting to roll with Daniel Jones over Anthony Richardson as their starter.

The Colts selected Richardson with the fourth overall pick of the NFL Draft just two years ago, so to see them throwing in the towel on the University of Florida product so quickly is definitely jarring.

Indianapolis may be aiming to select a quarterback in next year’s draft, which will likely be loaded with talent at the position. Taking that into consideration, the Colts may very well try to trade Richardson, who still has tantalizing ability and could potentially flourish in the right environment.

Well, Corbin K. Smith of Emerald Spectrum has identified a potential trade destination for Richardson, pegging the Las Vegas Raiders as a possible fit.

“I could absolutely see the Raiders trying to trade for Anthony Richardson to work with him behind Geno Smith,” Smith posted on X. “Pete Carroll has been a fan for a long time. And Pete has a pretty good track record with his staff of turning the careers around for QBs.”

The Raiders swung a trade to acquire Smith from the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason and then handed him a two-year contract extension that will take him through the end of 2027. However, Smith turns 35 years old in October, so Las Vegas does have to start thinking about the future under center.

Could Richardson potentially be the answer?

From a talent perspective, maybe, but the results haven’t been pretty for the 23-year-old. Last season, he made 11 starts and threw for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing a paltry 47.7 percent of his passes. He has also been limited to just 15 contests over the course of two campaigns due to rampant injury issues.

Richardson certainly has the physical archetype you want from a signal-caller, and he possesses clear dual-threat capabilities. But his horrific throwing accuracy and his subpar durability present major obstacles that he may not be able to overcome.
