The New York Yankees have been active at the trade deadline, but they still have plenty more work to do.
After acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon and infielder Amed Rosario, the Yankees probably have all the position player help they need. General manager Brian Cashman can now shift his attention to the pitching staff, which is in surprisingly rough shape by New York’s typical standards.
In a perfect world, the Yankees will add a starter and two relievers. The world isn’t perfect, and a lot of teams want arms at this time of year, but Cashman might as well shoot for the moon. To do that, he’ll need an expansive search.

Now, we know at least one bullpen arm the Yankees reportedly are currently thinking about adding.
On Sunday, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reported that Jake Bird of the Colorado Rockies was a name on the Yankees’ list of potential bullpen trade targets. Bird has more than a strikeout per inning this season, and won’t be a free agent until after the 2028 season.
“Multiple league sources told The Athletic that the Yankees were still exploring trades that would net them a reliever, after they boosted their infield by acquiring Amed Rosario from the Washington Nationals on Saturday and adding Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday,” wrote Kuty.
“A name to add to the ever-growing list of candidates they have reportedly been eyeing, according to league sources: righty Jake Bird of the Rockies. Several Yankees came away impressed with Bird when he had two appearances against them in Colorado in late May, one player told The Athletic.”
Bird, 29, has a 4.05 ERA in 53 2/3 innings this season, striking out 62 and walking 21. Coors Field is the worst place to pitch on the planet, so even though Bird has struggled of late, he’s had an impressive season, all things considered.
The Yankees surely won’t be the only team interested in 3 1/2 years of Bird. If the Rockies decide he’s available, it’s likely to be a competitive field as the contenders around baseball race to stock up on pitching.
