The quarterfinals of the UEFA Women’s Euro tournament continue on Friday as Spain takes on Switzerland. The winning side will advance to the semifinals to take on either France or Germany.

Spain won Group B, winning all three of its matches in a dominant showing. The Spanish side was the only one in the group to finish with a positive goal differential, at +11, while second-place Italy ended up at -1 due to a 3-1 loss to Spain. Overall, the Spaniards scored 14 goals and surrendered just three.

This is Spain’s fourth consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals of this event, but the country has yet to advance beyond that point in the three previous tournaments. This could be the year that Spain breaks through and returns to the semis for the first time since 1997.

Switzerland, the host of this year’s event, finished second in Group A with a 1-1-1 record. The side’s lone win in that round was a 2-0 victory over Iceland.

This Swiss side had never made it past the group stage of this tournament. In fact, 2017 and 2022 were the only other times it even qualified for the Women’s Euro tournament.
