Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Sends Strong Message to NFL Over 18-Game Schedule

The 2025 NFL season is right around the corner. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are ready to get back on the field to get the bad taste out of their mouths from losing the Super Bowl last season to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Of course, the Chiefs are preparing for a 17-game regular season schedule. However, there has been a push from the NFL to consider an 18-game schedule in the future.

Fans wouldn’t hate adding an extra game to the football season. That being said, another game would have major ramifications when it comes to the players and potential injuries.

To that end Mahomes spoke out and sent a strong message to the NFL.

During a recent interview with CNBC Sport, Mahomes revealed his thoughts on the matter. He would want to see the NFL make a second change if they did move to an 18-game season.

“I think that you’d have to find a way to have more bye weeks, more time spread out,” Mahomes said. “Because, I mean, you’ve seen the amount of injuries that have kind of piled up there at the end of seasons, and you want to have the best players playing in the biggest games. And so if there were a way to get to 18 games, I’m not — I’m not a big fan of it. But if there were a way, I think you got to add some bye weeks in there to give more time for guys’ bodies.”

Adding a second bye into the season shouldn’t be much of a problem. In fact, that would simply make the NFL season longer, which fans would like.

More football is always a good thing for the fans. The players, on the other hand, already deal with enough physical pain to simply add another game to the schedule without an extra period of rest.

Mahomes is entering the 2025 campaign with a locked in mindset. His teammate, wide receiver Xavier Worthy, recently spoke out about his quarterback with a brief but bold message.

“He in a different mode right now,” Worthy said.

It will be interesting to see if the league moves forward with an 18-game season. Mahomes has now made his thoughts clear on the matter.

Hopefully, if another game is added, they take into consideration more rest for the players.
