Daniel Jones Praised for Strong First Impression With Colts

Midway through his sixth season with the New York Giants, Daniel Jones found himself looking for a new home in the NFL. As he prepares for this next chapter of his career, he appears ready to battle to remain a starting QB in the league.

Back in 2019, the Giants drafted Jones No. 6 overall to be a pillar of the franchise for the foreseeable future. They doubled down on this in 2023 when they inked him to a four-year contract worth $160 million. However, just one year into this deal, the Giants decided to waive Jones and end the experiment with him under center.

Jones wasn’t on the market long, as the Minnesota Vikings brought him in to be a backup for the remainder of the 2024 campaign. After not seeing the field for them, he elected to enter free agency again this offseason.

Moving forward, Jones has found a short-term home in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts. He was likely brought in as insurance for Anthony Richardson, who has dealt with multiple injuries to start his pro career. He is currently sidelined due to a shoulder ailment, paving a path for Jones to get first-team reps during mandatory minicamp.

Jones seems to have made the most of his opportunity with the starters, leaving a strong first impression with the Colts. During Saturday’s edition of “SportsCenter,” NFL insider Jeremy Fowler touched on how Jones has looked so far with his new team.

“But I was told Jones was a fast processor at the line of scrimmage, good chemistry with his receivers,” Fowler said. “He was quote ‘very sharp’ as it was told to me in minicamp as the guy. So, it’s going to be fascinating once they hit camp with that battle.”

For Jones, this is an opportunity to put a rocky 2024 campaign behind him. Before being waived by the Giants, he posted a 2-8 record while throwing for 2,070 yards and eight touchdowns.

As Fowler mentioned, the Colts could have one of the more interesting QB battles in the NFL during training camp. With Richardson playing in just 15 games across two seasons, he hasn’t been durable enough to lockdown the QB1 spot in Indianapolis. Now with a change of scenery, Jones could swoop in an attempt to get his career back on track with a new starting role.

While Jones attempts to find his footing elsewhere, the Giants are gearing up for a new era at the quarterback position. Russell Wilson is set to take over the reins in 2025, with first-round pick Jaxson Dart waiting in the wings as the franchise’s long-term plan.
