Republican voters view Elon Musk less favorably after his falling out with President Donald Trump last week, according to a new poll.
Newsweek reached out to Musk for comment via Tesla‘s press email.
Why It Matters
The relationship between Musk and Trump deteriorated last week after the Tesla CEO criticized Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, a key piece of legislation that, if passed by the Senate, would include an extension of his tax cuts and funding for other priorities, such as immigration enforcement. Musk raised concerns about the bill’s impact on the national debt.
The fallout could have significant implications for GOP politics moving forward, as Musk remains a highly influential figure in the tech world and contributed nearly $300 million to support Republicans in the 2024 elections.
What To Know
A poll released by YouGov on Tuesday suggests that Musk’s influence among Republican voters may be waning amid the feud. Musk’s net favorability among Republicans fell to +39 from +58 the week before, according to the poll.
Sixty-seven percent of Republicans viewed Musk favorably, while 28 percent viewed him unfavorably. This compares to 76 percent who view him favorably and 18 percent who view him unfavorably in last week’s YouGov poll.
Among all adults, Musk’s favorability—which was already negative—fell from -9 to -23 in the latest poll. Most Republicans (74 percent) are siding with Trump. Only 6 percent are siding with Musk in the feud.
The poll surveyed 1,533 U.S. adults from June 6 to June 9, 2025, and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Musk emerged as a key confidant last year for Trump, who appointed him in January to serve as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a task force focusing on cutting waste in federal spending.
After Musk left his DOGE role last month, he began openly criticizing the flagship One Big Beautiful Bill, with the feud intensifying over his social media posts and Trump suggesting his administration could end federal contracts with Musk’s companies.
Musk has since expressed regret for his social media posts about the president.
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far,” Musk wrote on his X platform on Wednesday morning.
He didn’t say exactly which posts he regrets writing. Some included saying that Republicans would not have won in 2024 without his support and accusing the White House of withholding the Jeffrey Epstein files due to Trump allegedly being named in the trove of documents.
What People Are Saying
President Donald Trump told Pod Force One with The New York Post‘s Miranda Devine on Wednesday: “I have no hard feelings. But I was really surprised that that happened.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Newsweek: “This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted. The President is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again.”
Elon Musk, on X: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.”
What Happens Next
Whether Trump and Musk will eventually reconcile remains unclear, despite the two having ceased making public jabs at one another this week. Trump has signaled that he is open to forgiving Musk.
