MLB Veteran Jean Segura Announces Sudden Retirement

Jean Segura, who spent 12 years in Major League Baseball and earned All-Star honors in 2013 and 2018, has retired from MLB, his agency CAA announced on Wednesday.

“Congratulations (Jean Segura) on an amazing career: 1,413 games, 1,545 hits, 211 stolen bases, 110 home runs, 2016 National League leader in hits, 2013 All-Star and 2018 All-Star. Good luck in retirement,” CAA Baseball wrote in a post on Instagram.

Segura, 35, last appeared in an MLB game in 2023 with the Miami Marlins.

He began his career back in 2012 when he debuted with the Los Angeles Angels on July 24, 2012.

Segura signed with the Angels as an international free agent in 2007. Three days after making his MLB debut, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in a deadline deal that sent Cy Young winner Zack Greinke to the Halos.

Segura earned his first All-Star honor in 2013 — his first full season with the Brewers. He spent two more seasons with Milwaukee before being traded again, this time in the offseason to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Segura spent the 2016 season with Arizona before being traded for the third time in his career, heading to the Seattle Mariners in a five-player deal that brought Ketel Marte to Arizona.

Segura signed a five-year, $70 million extension with Seattle in June 2017, and earned his second career All-Star appearance in 2018. Then, he was on the move again.

After the 2018 season, Segura was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent four seasons in Philadelphia before finishing his career with Miami in 2023.

Segura was with the Baltimore Orioles organization in 2024, but didn’t earn an MLB call up. He most recently played in the Dominican Winter League.

Segura finishes his MLB career with over 11 years of service time, making him eligible for the fully vested pension.

He was a career .281 hitter with 110 home runs, 513 runs batted in, 211 stolen bases, 237 doubles and an OPS of .729. In addition to his two All-Star selections, he led the NL in hits in 2016 with 203 and appeared in 17 postseason games, including six World Series games with the Phillies in 2022.
