LeBron James Provides Update on Los Angeles Lakers’ Future, Retirement

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers were unable to get out of the first round of the NBA Playoffs. They were ousted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in just five games and weren’t able to put up much of a fight.

Following the series loss, the questions have been swirling about James’ future. Will he be back for another season in 2025-26? Could he choose to retire?

No one knows what he’s going to do at this point in time, although many expect him to run it back for at least one more year with Luka Doncic on the Lakers.

Regardless of when James decides to retire, he’ll go down as one of the “GOAT’s” in NBA history. The debate of James vs. Michael Jordan isn’t the focus right now, but it’s one that will continue for many years to come.

Recently, James provided an update about where he is in his decision-making process about the future. He’s not too far along in those considerations.

During an episode of the “Mind The Game” podcast recently, James spoke out about his thoughts on the matter.

“I haven’t had the conversation with the family yet as far as me going forward or whatever the case may be, but we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Throughout the course of the 2024-25 NBA season, James once again defied age. He played in 70 regular season games, averaging 24.4 points per game to go along with 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and a steal. He also shot 51.3 percent from the floor and 37.6 percent from the three-point line.

Coming out of the loss to the Timberwolves, James has been dealing with a knee injury. While there have been concerns about the injury, one NBA insider doesn’t think it’s something to worry about too much.

Jovan Buha of The Athletic provided an outlook for James’ knee injury recently.

“He’ll still be working out and staying in shape while he is resting the knee,” Buha said. “Then once it’s cleared, he will ramp up and get back to being LeBron. I don’t think this is something that is going to linger into training camp, into the preseason, into next season. I think it is something that he will have a full offseason to recover from and be fine going into next year.”

Only time will tell, but James hasn’t even reached the point of discussing his future with his family yet. Fans will have to wait longer to find out an official decision.
