Jeff Bridges Wants to Return to Most Beloved Role

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Jeff Bridges is willing, ready, and able to play The Dude again. The actor was on hand after a screening of “The Big Lebowski” at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles to answer questions when he was asked about the prospect of a sequel. According to Bridges, not only would he love to return to the role, but co-star Julianne Moore is on board as well.

“Of course,” Bridges said. “Julianne [Moore] and I would fantasize about that. We did another movie together, “Seventh Son”, she played a witch in that movie. And we would often say, ‘Gee it’s all set up for a sequel.'”

Of course, even while Bridges and Moore might be a game for a sequel, that doesn’t mean it will happen. Bridges added that he didn’t think Ethan and Joel Coen – the filmmakers behind “The Big Lebowski” – would want to make a follow up.

“I don’t think the brothers are going to do that,” Bridges said. “I don’t think that’s their style. But I must say, they surprise us all the time… If they called me up and said, ‘Hey let’s do it again,’ I’d say, ‘Absolutely, come on.'”

Imagine a a detective story that’s supposed to be headed by hardnosed Raymond Chandler private investigator sleuth, but that sleuth is instead replaced by a washed up stoner who wants nothing more out of life than to spend it bowling; in a nutshell, that’s “The Big Lebowski.” The Dude is dragged into a larger crime story because of a case of mistaken identity and is forced to contend with dirty cops, pornographers, German nihilists, and more. His only help is John Goodman’s Walter, who is mostly more of a hindrance than anything else. Along with Bridges, Moore, and Goodman, the film starred Steve Buscemi, David Huddleston, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid, David Thewlis, Peter Stormare, Jon Polito, and Ben Gazzara.

Whether or not the Coen brothers would humor the notion of a sequel to “The Big Lebowski”, it’s already enjoyed a spinoff. John Turturro reprised the role of his character from the film in “The Jesus Rolls,” which Turturro also wrote and directed. Considering the film was both a critical and commercial bomb, it probably wouldn’t serve as an example to inspire the Coens.
