The Atlanta Braves came into the season with a bit of a depleted pitching staff, and they haven’t done much to fix it. Atlanta lost Charlie Morton and Max Fried in the offseason before losing Reynaldo López to a shoulder injury this year.
While López should return at some point this season, the Braves could look to swing a massive trade in order to fill out the depth of the pitching rotation.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently suggested the Braves could swing a massive trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates to acquire starting pitcher Andrew Heaney.

“The big three of Strider, Chris Sale, and Spencer Schwellenbach could be all sorts of special when healthy,” Miller wrote. “But having some combination of Grant Holmes, AJ Smith-Shawver, and Bryce Elder filling out the rest of the rotation isn’t particularly promising for a team that has gotten out to a brutal start to the year.
“We do still expect Atlanta to be in the postseason hunt in late July, but very likely searching to add at least one starting pitcher to the mix. Potential Solutions: Nick Martinez, Andrew Heaney, Aaron Civale.”
Heaney, 33, is in the final year of his contract. Spotrac projects him to sign a two-year deal worth $21 million when he lands in free agency next offseason. Because of this contract, the Pirates will likely look to trade him away.
The lefty is off to quite a hot start this season. Through two starts, he’s tossed 12 innings and allowed just two earned runs. He’s limiting hard contact and generating a lot of swings and misses this season.
The Braves would be better off with Heaney in their rotation compared to some of the options they’ve been using early on this season.
