Bread Recall Update as FDA Issues Risk Warning Over ‘Serious’ Allergy Fears

A Texas bakery‘s recall of more than 700 cases of brioche bread products, following discovery of the presence of undeclared allergens and artificial dye, has been labeled a Class II risk by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to a release published the agency, the products were shipped without labels disclosing the presence of milk, soy and FD&C Yellow No. 5.

Newsweek reached out to the bakery, The Bakery Group, for comment on Thursday.

Why It Matters

The FDA lists milk and soy among the nine major food allergens—the others being eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame.

Reactions to these ingredients may include hives, rashes, swelling, vomiting and respiratory issues. Severe cases can cause anaphylaxis. The synthetic dye Yellow No. 5, also known as tartrazine, can also cause allergic responses, especially in people with aspirin sensitivity.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to Soy, Wheat Milk or Yellow FD&C#5 run the risk of possible serious allergic reaction if consumed,” the FDA release stated.

What To Know

The Bakery Group announced on March 25 it was recalling 629 cases of its Dense Brioche Pullman Loaf and 104 cases of 4.5-inch Brioche Hamburger Buns.

A Wednesday post from the FDA announced the recall had been given a class II risk classification, meaning the affected products could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

The products were distributed to wholesalers in Texas between December 24, 2024, and March 12, 2025. The loaves carry the product code 654203, while the buns bear the code 54500.

The products were delivered in brown boxes labeled for either Ben E. Keith or Rodeo Goat Casa Linda. The loaves were packaged seven per case, and the hamburger buns were sold 48 to a case.

The labeling omissions were discovered during a routine inspection by the State of Texas Health and Human Services.

The company said the issue stemmed from human error in its labeling and packaging department and that corrective actions were taken as of March 19. No illnesses have been reported, the company said in its March statement.

What People Are Saying

The Bakery Group said in the recall announcement: “We greatly apologize for this error and any inconvenience this has caused our distributors and customers.”

The recall is listed as ongoing. Customers with questions can contact The Bakery Group at 214-823-3943.
