President Donald Trump directed the Justice Department to investigate former Homeland Security official Miles Taylor over his anonymous essay and subsequent book criticizing Trump’s leadership during his first term. Trump also accused Taylor of treason for exposing what Taylor said were serious concerns about the administration’s conduct.

After the order, Taylor told The Independent via text message that he anticipated becoming a target of the president’s administration.

“Dissent isn’t unlawful. It certainly isn’t treasonous. America is headed down a dark path,” Taylor said. He continued: “Never has a man so inelegantly proved another man’s point.”

Trump also ordered an investigation into Chris Krebs, who served as his administration’s top election security official. Krebs is accused by Trump of being involved in a plot to steal the 2020 election. Krebs, a cybersecurity expert, consistently maintained that he found no evidence of election fraud following Joe Biden‘s electoral victory.
