President Donald Trump‘s approval rating from American men has taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks, numerous YouGov/Economist polls show.
Newsweek reached out to the White House via email for comment on Wednesday.
Why It Matters
Trump has repeatedly touted positive approval ratings and polling during news conferences and campaign rallies throughout his political career.
When the president returned to the White House in January, Trump coasted in with positive numbers, but his approval ratings have dipped significantly in the last couple of weeks, notably amid sweeping tariff announcements.
Slipping in polls could limit Trump’s political clout in an already highly polarized climate and potentially hurt Republican chances in the 2026 midterms.
What To Know
In a new poll released by YouGov/Economist on Wednesday, Trump’s approval rating with U.S. men is 48 percent. The poll was taken from April 5 to April 8 among 1,741 people, with a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
The week before, Trump’s approval rating with men was 51 percent in a survey taken from March 30 to April 1 among 1,626 people, with a margin of error 3.3 percent. A previous poll released by YouGov/Economist taken from March 22 to March 25 shows Trump’s approval rating with men was 55 percent. That poll surveyed 1,600 people, with a margin of error of 3.4 percent.
The weeks before that show Trump with either 53 percent or 54 percent approval ratings with men.
In an email to Newsweek regarding the poll, YouGov’s Allen Houston also noted Trump’s overall approval slipping amid his second term in office: “Trump began his second term as a more popular president than he ever was during his first term. But Trump’s -8 net approval this week matches his net approval from the same stage of his first term.”

What People Are Saying
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont on X, formerly Twitter, last month: “Trump likes to talk about his ‘mandate.’ Really? He got 4 million fewer votes than Biden in 2020, and the only President with a lower approval rating at this point in his presidency was Trump in his 1st term. Trump has no mandate to move us to oligarchy or authoritarianism.”
Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland on X last week, noting the stock market taking a hit after Trump’s tariff announcement: “Trump’s approval rating soon to follow:”
Fox News co-host Jessica Tarlov on X last month: “Donald Trump’s approval ratings are underwater across the board. Americans don’t support how he is handling the economy, the federal work force, foreign policy, or trade. Which, is basically everything a President does.”
