The Boston Red Sox were likely to pursue Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in free agency next winter, but the star recently agreed to a 14-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, so the Red Sox will need to spend their money elsewhere.
While the upcoming free agent class isn’t loaded with as much talent as last offseason’s, there are still quality players set to become available.
FanSided’s Chris Landers suggested the Red Sox could pivot off Guerrero and onto another $533 million (projected market value by Spotrac) star: Kyle Tucker. Landers notes there are risks to this deal, but in the end, it would be a risk worth taking.

“But if there’s a player worth making it work for, it’s Tucker, who also happens to hit lefties almost as well as he hits righties and has enough power to play in any ballpark,” Landers wrote. “It won’t come cheap; with Guerrero Jr. off the market, every big-market team is going to be lining up to poach Tucker from the Chicago Cubs. This is the cost of doing business at the top of the sport, though, and if Breslow wants to keep up with the Joneses, he might have to take a plunge he’s not entirely comfortable with.”
While the Red Sox don’t necessarily need outfield help, adding Tucker isn’t ever going to be a bad thing. He’s set to be the best player on the market this offseason and the Red Sox will be one of the only teams in the league who can afford to pay him upward of $500 million.
Tucker is one of the best pure hitters in baseball, and he’s putting it on full display right now. Boston had the money to offer Juan Soto a deal worth around $700 million. The front office could find a way to win the Tucker free agency sweepstakes next winter.
