NASCAR’s RFK Racing Takes a Dig at Dale Jr. vs. Lamar Jackson Legal Clash

NASCAR‘s RFK Racing has taken a subtle dig at the legal clash between the NFL‘s quarterback Lamar Jackson and Dale Earnhardt Jr., relating to the number 8. The funny post on X comes a day after Dale Jr.’s JR Motorsports confirmed that it had moved to a different “stylized 8.”

Newsweek Sports reported that Jackson had challenged Dale Jr.’s pending trademark claim with a notice of opposition. Jackson argued that the font claimed by Dale Jr. is similar to the registered trademarks of his own brands, ‘ERA 8’ and ‘ERA 8 BY LAMAR JACKSON.’

Jackson believes the similarity in the font could confuse potential consumers to “mistakenly believe the products [Earnhardt Jr.] offers under the mark 8 are related to the products and services provided by [Jackson].”

Though Jackson deals with a different product line, comprising “bottoms as clothing, footwear, headwear, tops as clothing [and] undergarments,” he argues it could still clash with products associated with Dale Jr.’s branding, which include apparel, die-cast cars, and toys.

Following the legal challenge thrown by Jackson, Dale Jr. released a statement on X. The statement read:

“Through the USTPO, we successfully secured the rights to the stylized 8. Therefore, we will be moving away from the original JRM 8 we have used since 2019.

“We are looking forward to the remainder of an already successful season.”

From the looks of it, the trademark dispute has already ended. However, RFK Racing has made fun of the case by posting images of its No. 6 and No. 17 cars.

The team stated in the caption:

“Excited to have Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen numbers on the cars this weekend” [sic]

Funnily, Baker Mayfield is a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Josh Allen is a quarterback for the Buffalo Bills of the NFL. In reality, Brad Keselowski drives the No. 6 car, while Chris Buescher takes the wheel of the No. 17 car.

RFK Racing recently announced the appointment of Dawn Turner as the Senior Vice President of Brand Strategy, Marketing, and Communications. Coming from the world of the NFL and NBA, she brings a wealth of experience that will benefit the team. Speaking on the appointment, RFK President Steve Newmark said:

“We’re excited to have Dawn on our team. Her proven track record of enhancing brand identity, fan engagement, and integrated marketing across major sports teams and entertainment properties will be invaluable in strengthening RFK.

“We’re thrilled to be able to bring in someone with Dawn’s talent, character and experience to help us continue to evolve our sports marketing platform.”
