Mets Would Part With 4 Prospects for Game-Changing Ace In Blockbuster Trade Proposal

The New York Mets started the season short-handed in the starting rotation. Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea both suffered injuries in spring training, and Manaea has reportedly suffered a setback that will shut him down for another two weeks.

Even with Manaea and Montas, the Mets rotation is not the strong point of their team. They could be looking to change that around the trade deadline in hopes of making another deep run in October. FanSided’s Damien Flores proposed this trade that would bring Sandy Alcántara to Queens from the Miami Marlins:

  • Mets receive: right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcántara
  • Marlins receive: shortstop Jett Williams (Mets No.2 prospect), right-handed pitcher Nolan McLean (Mets No.5 prospect), infielder Luisangel Acuña (Mets No.7 prospect) and right-handed pitcher Nate Dohm (Mets No.19 prospect)

“At first glimpse, the package does look like a lot but a player like Sandy Alcantara takes the Mets to another level by including a quality ace in a rotation that is desperate for a top pitcher,” wrote Flores.

The Mets would be giving up four young players that the Marlins could build around. It’s a hefty price, but very much worth it.

Alcántara signed a five-year, $56 million deal in 2022. He is under contract through 2026 and has a club option for 2027. He won the National League Cy Young in 2022 with a 2.28 ERA and 207 strikeouts. He also led the big leagues in innings pitched and complete games that season.

He struggled in 2023 and missed all of last season. However, that has not stopped Mets stars from welcoming a trade for him.

“It would be one of the best trades that we could have,” Juan Soto told Mike Puma of the New York Post. “I know we have great pitching here, but adding a Cy Young winner like that would be huge.”

“It would almost be like adding Soto,” shortstop Francisco Lindor told Puma. “You add Soto, it’s going to help the team. You add Alcántara and it’s going to help the team.”

Alcántara is a workhorse and has club control. Given the Marlins’ situation, they could once again be selling at the deadline. Last year, they traded Luis Arráez and Tanner Scott to the San Diego Padres. Could they ship Alcántara to the Mets this summer?
