The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of a few NFL teams who still seemingly need a starting quarterback for the 2025 season.

The team watched Russell Wilson and Justin Fields leave in free agency, while veteran backup Mason Rudolph has been the only notable addition to the ream thus far.

The Steelers have been connected to veteran Aaron Rodgers this offseason, with the veteran even visiting with the team. However, it doesn’t appear that a deal is imminent and the team could grow weary of waiting on the passer to make a decision.

What if the Steelers decide not to go down the Aaron Rodgers path and instead opt to select a passer in the 2025 NFL Draft? Tomlin himself said he “wouldn’t close the door” on adding a quarterback in the draft.

“I wouldn’t close the door on any component of acquisition at that position,” he said.

The Steelers are currently slated to have the No. 21 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. It’s likely the top prospects, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, will both be off the board by this point.

However, Tomlin was also asked about the lack of first-round talent at the position in this class, and the coach revealed that he’s not worried about how other teams evaluate the passers.

“I don’t worry how others judge guys,” he said. “We’re just trying to get to know the pool ourselves. … Last week was a big week for us. Went to Texas, Ohio State and Notre Dame, for example. It’s just part of our process, getting the complete totality of the process, getting exposure to these guys in as many places as we can.”

Jalen Milroe, Will Howard, Quinn Ewers, and Riley Leonard have all been studied by the team so far. Meanwhile Tyler Shough and Jaxson Dart are being brought in to the facility for pre-draft visits.

Considering none of these passers are thought to be immediate starters, it’s possible the team could still add Rodgers. The best scenario for the Steelers could be bringing in Rodgers for the 2025 season while also adding a developmental passer to learn behind the veteran.

A trade up to select Ward or Sanders is probably unlikely at this point. The Steelers gave up their 2025 second-round pick in a trade for D.K. Metcalf, so the team may not want to empty the cupboard even more.
