Houthis claim attack on U.S. aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman: what we know

The Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi group claimed a new attack on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and its accompanying warships in the Red Sea.

The U.S. Navy has not reported damage as American airstrikes continue against Houthi targets in Yemen.

Newsweek has reached out to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) for comment.

Why It Matters

The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, have claimed multiple attacks against the aircraft carrier since President Donald Trump launched a military campaign against the group on March 15.

The U.S.-designated terrorist group has carried out more than 100 missile and drone attacks on merchant vessels navigating the vital Red Sea corridor since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza in October 2023, saying it acting in solidarity with the Palestinians.

What To Know

Ansar Allah said Thursday that its naval, missile and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) forces had targeted the USS Harry S. Truman with cruise missiles and UAVs.

“The engagement continued for long hours, and part of the attack on our country was thwarted,” the group’s military wing said in a statement on messaging app Telegram.

The U.S. has not reported any damages from this or previous attacks.

U.S. airstrikes have reportedly targeted the city of Sanaa and other parts of Yemen, as well as Houthi sites near the Hudaydah Port.

Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell announced that the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group would be joined in the (CENTCOM) area of responsibility by the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group on the orders of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in a warning to Iran and its proxy groups in the region.

What People Are Saying

Yemeni Houthi Military on Telegram: “The Yemeni Armed Forces’ naval forces, UAV force, and missile force, with the help of Allah Almighty, carried out a specific and joint military operation. They engaged the US aircraft carrier Truman and its affiliated warships in the northern Red Sea with using a number of cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. The Yemeni Armed Forces, with the help of Allah Almighty, will continue to target all American warships and all sources of threat in the declared area of operations. The aggressive raids will not deter them from fulfilling their religious, moral, and humanitarian duties toward the oppressed Palestinian people.”

Institute for the Study of War (ISW): “The Houthis conducted three combined cruise missile and drone attacks targeting the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and US destroyers in the Red Sea between March 31 and April 1. The attack did not succeed, and CENTCOM did not acknowledge the attacks.”

What Happens Next

Although the Houthis have not had confirmed success in any of their attacks against U.S. targets, but the fact that they are continuing them also shows they have not beeen broken by the U.S. airstrikes. As the confrontation grows, there is the potential for even bigger conflict between the United States and Iran, which backs the Houthis.
