An English bulldog has developed an unusual nightly habit that continues to amuse her human family.
Every night at 10 without fail, Bruno and his fiancee Beth, who live just outside Chicago, know exactly where they can find their dog Pancake.
She became a part of their lives three years ago, and there has rarely been a dull moment since. “We’ve had her since she was a puppy,” Bruno told Newsweek. “Pancake loves to nap and chill, but usually at around 6 pm she gets a burst of energy.”
Within a few hours of that burst, however, Pancake is ready to settle down for the night, and has even identified a special spot for herself: under her paw-rents’ bed.
Though some might call it a hiding space, Bruno has his own theory as to why Pancake is so drawn to this particular spot. “I think it’s her safe spot and she just loves snoozing there,” he said. “She’s been doing it for as long as I remember.”
The idea of it serving as a “safe spot” jibes with what Meaghan Thomas, DVM, a veterinarian at East Ridge Animal Hospital, explained about these types of behaviors. “Dogs like having private den-like spaces,” she told Rover.com. “It can become a safe space for them, like under a table or in a kennel.”
Bruno said Pancake is a big fan of eating apples and Goldfish biscuits. But if there is one thing he loves more than both, it’s sleep, with Pancake snoozing an estimated 18 hours a day. No wonder he’s so keen on this particular spot.
According to Bruno, as well as trying to settle in at around 10 p.m., Pancake has also made a habit of napping in the same spot just after his breakfast.
Unfortunately, on almost every occasion, Pancake ends up being turfed out by Bruno and his fiancee. In a video posted to TikTok under the handle @thebabypancake, viewers are given a glimpse of just how often Pancake’s human companions are forced to gently remove him from his favorite new spot.
In the caption accompanying the video, Bruno explains how this is something that happens “Every. Single. Night.” Bruno said: “We make sure to get her out at night because she has her own bed where she has water and is more comfortable! Plus we are concerned she might get hurt if we get on the bed with her down there. But This is really the only close up space.”
The video had viewers amused. “it’s nighty nite time pancakes,” one joked, with another writing, “it’s a delicate dance.”
Though Bruno fully expects Pancake to continue her under-the-bed antics, both he and his fiancee wouldn’t change their pup for the world.
“She has a lot of quirks,” Bruno said. “She also loves to nibble on the ears of anyone that will let her.” Though it may be unusual, he hopes the video serves as a reminder that every dog is different and must be managed and cared for in their own special way.
“Our doggies all have very unique personalities and as owners we should respect their quirks while also ensuring they are safe,” he said.
