Former All-Star and potential future first-ballot Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony has expressed his desire to own an NBA team one day—not just any NBA team, but the Washington Wizards.

In the latest episode of Anthony’s podcast, 7 PM in Brooklyn, he shared what team he wants to own and why he would make a good owner.

“I want to buy the [Washington] Wizards, first of all,” stated Anthony. “I’d be a great owner.”

After that, the clip transitions to ESPN analyst Monica McNutt asking Anthony what would make him a good owner. Anthony then gave a detailed answer to why that would be the case.

“Former player,” said Anthony. “I understand players, I understand personnel, I understand being strategic, I understand building a team, but I also understand what I don’t understand.

“I know what I don’t know. You also have the put people in those positions. President, GM, you put all the basketball acumen in those positions, and then you cover that with business minds, so now you create these levels. The business mind can never question the basketball mind, but it has to be a connection between the two.”

It is clear that Anthony has thought a lot about this.

As things stand, Ted Leonsis, through his company Monumental Sports & Entertainment, owns the Wizards. Leonsis also owns the Washington Capitals and Washington Mystics.

Leonsis is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the company that owns these teams. Leonsis acquired the Wizards and the version center (now Capital One Arena) in June 2010. He purchased the Wizards from the family of the late Abe Pollin for approximately $310 million, bringing his total ownership to 100 percent.

Prior to complete ownership, Leonsis owned 44 percent of the team and the arena.

According to CNBC’s NBA team valuations, the Wizards are valued at $4.25 billion as of February 2025. It is unclear if Anthony can purchase that amount, and the Wizards are not for sale.

Nonetheless, Anthony is confident in his abilities and is adamant that he will own the Wizards one day.

Anthony is an all-time great and will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame this year. In his career, Anthony was named a 10-time All-Star, six-time All-NBA, 2013 scoring champion, and member of the NBA 75th Anniversary team.
