Bulls vs Thunder Injury Report: Statuses of Lonzo Ball, Chet Holmgren Revealed

Will a pair of oft-hurt former NBA lottery picks suit up in a late-season showdown between playoff hopefuls?

That’s one of the big questions stemming from a recent NBA injury report.

In fact, two former lottery picks now on the Bulls, point guards Lonzo Ball (the No. 2 pick by his hometown Los Angeles Lakers in the 2017 NBA Draft) and Josh Giddey (the No. 6 selection by the Thunder in the 2021 NBA Draft), are both on Chicago’s injury report.

Earlier on Monday, Ball was considered doubtful to return from the right wrist sprain

Giddey, meanwhile, was questionable to play through a sore right hip.

In 65 games this season with Chicago, Giddey is averaging 14.2 points on .466/.380/.777 shooting splits, 7.8 rebounds, 6.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.6 blocks a night.

Giddey has been on something of a tear across his last 15 contests with the Bulls. The 21-year-old is averaging 21.4 points while slashing .514/.508/.805, 9.7 rebounds, 8.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.9 blocks a night.

Chicago combo guard Ayo Dosunmu is done for the year after undergoing a left shoulder surgery, and his absence combined with Ball’s has forced Giddey to quarterback more of the team’s offense.

New Bulls trade additions Kevin Huerter (right thumb sprain) and Tre Jones (left midfoot sprain) are also on the shelf.

Thunder big man Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, was listed as questionable to suit up through a left hip injury.

Now, the final statuses of Ball and Holmgren have been revealed.

Ball will sit out yet another contest as the year winds down.

In his 35 healthy games for the Bulls this season (his first action since 2021-22), Ball is averaging 7.6 points on .366/.344/.815 shooting splits, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists a night. Even after three successive knee surgeries, the 6-foot-6 UCLA product is Chicago’s second-strongest point-of-attack defender, behind only Dosunmu.

Holmgren, meanwhile, will play, as part of a two-big lineup next to center Isaiah Hartenstein — per Underdog NBA.

The 7-foot-1 Gonzaga alum has only been healthy for 26 games this season. He also missed the entirety of what would have been his rookie season, in 2022-23, but the lengthy big man played all 82 games last year.

He’s averaging 14.8 points on .493/.355/.720 shooting splits, 8.4 boards and 1.8 dimes a night.

Elsewhere on the Thunder, Ousmane Dieng (left calf strain), Alex Ducas (right quad strain), Ajay Mitchell (right great toe surgery recovery), rookie Nikola Topic (left knee surgery), and Aaron Wiggins (left Achilles tendinitis) are all on the shelf.
