A man went thrifting in search of a new dinner plate but ended up scoring a lamp for $5.99—later discovering it was worth $350.
Charles Lancelot Brochet (u/CharlesYO8), a 28-year-old sustainable food systems consultant from Los Angeles, visited the Goodwill on Beverly Boulevard with his girlfriend, Sarah. He shared their unexpected find in the subreddit “Thrift Store Hauls,” where the post quickly gained traction, amassing more than 4,300 upvotes.
The couple had been browsing for a plate when an employee wheeled out a cart stocked with new arrivals. Brochet was instantly drawn to a bright orange lamp. Upon closer inspection, he noticed a “made in Italy” label.
“I was overwhelmed with excitement. My body was shaking and couldn’t concentrate. My girlfriend didn’t quite understand my excitement, but couldn’t help and laugh when she saw me struggling to concentrate on looking for an aesthetic plate,” Brochet told Newsweek.
Brochet immediately recognized that the lamp had a distinctive aesthetic and recognized it was inspired by the midcentury art movement.
“My first thought [was] that it resembled pieces that I saw during an exhibition at the Pompidou museum in Paris,” he said.
In that moment, Brochet whispered to his girlfriend, wary of drawing attention to his discovery. “I bet that’s a valuable lamp,” he said.
“I flipped it upside down, similar to when we were looking at plates to check for maker marks, saw that it was made in Italy, and said audibly, ‘Bingo!'” Brochet said.
A quick online search confirmed his suspicion—he had stumbled upon a valuable piece.
“I did not put the lamp in our cart in fear that someone would recognize its value and nab it. I didn’t let go of it from my hands until the checkout. Even then, I was nervous that the cashier would realize its value and call a manager to replace the price tag.”
The lamp turned out to be an Artemide Nesso lamp, an iconic midcentury modern design originally created by Giancarlo Mattioli in the 1960s. Known for its striking, futuristic silhouette and vibrant hue, the Nesso lamp remains a coveted statement piece among design enthusiasts.
Reddit users were quick to express their excitement over Brochet’s discovery.

“Omg [oh my God]! I’ve been wanting one of those! Congratulations,” commented another.
“This is so neat! Orange is one of my favorite colors, and I use it a lot in my home decor!” added a fellow enthusiast.
