The Houston Astros struggled tremendously at first base for the last few seasons, largely because of the tremendous flop of an acquisition that was Jose Abreu.
Abreu came to Houston as a slugger with a track record for smashing home runs. During his two seasons in Houston, he posted a WAR near -2.0. Now, he’s a free agent, and there’s been little to no interest shown by any team toward adding Abreu to their organization.
Just Baseball’s Michael Monreal recently suggested the aforementioned Abreu could enter retirement following a lack of interest shown in free agency.

“The fall of Abreu needs to be studied. As recent as 2022, he hit north of .300 in 157 games with the White Sox, showing no signs of slowing down,” Monreal wrote. “However, after going to the Astros, the production from the former Rookie of the Year cratered. In 2024, Abreu was borderline unplayable, with an abysmal slash line that accumulated -1.7 bWAR in 35 games.
“At 38 years old, it’s hard to envision any sort of comeback for the right-handed slugger. With players like Brendan Rodgers and Joey Gallo only getting minor league deals, it’s highly unlikely that a team would take a flyer.”
Coming off a -1.7 WAR performance in under 40 games last year, there aren’t many teams that consider Abreu a big leaguer at this point. With first base being an offense-first position, it’s almost a guarantee that he finds a job in the big leagues.
