‘Invincible’ Live-Action Movie Gets Major Update From Creator

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

A live-action “Invincible” movie was announced almost a decade ago, in 2017, and creator Robert Kirkman just let fans know that not only is the movie still in the works, but that he’d be “shocked” if it didn’t happen.

Speaking to ComicBook about the film, Kirkman said, “Unfortunately, there’s not much I can say. I will say that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie. That’s kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately. It’s still early going.”

Kirkman added, “I would be shocked if it doesn’t happen one day.”

What does Kirkman mean about the animated series making the live-action movie’s development “vastly easier and vastly more difficult?” Well, an earlier quote from Kirkman sheds some light on that. Speaking about the film last year, Kirkman said, “Just because, in relation to the show, it has to provide a different experience. It has to still be true to ‘Invincible’ in some interesting ways. But it has to be its own thing. It has to stand on its own. And so that’s something we’re spending a lot of time crafting. But I think when it finally happens, it’s gonna be really cool.”

The “Invincible” live-action movie isn’t the only franchise media in the works outside the animated series. Kirkman recently gave a carefully worded update on an “Invincible” video game that included the encouraging quote “I’m gonna play it safe and just say, from what I have seen, I am more excited than I’ve been about anything involving Invincible.”

Season 3 of the “Invincible” animated series on Amazon Prime Video just ended and the season finale is about as violent and explosive as any entry in the series so far. The Viltrumite warrior Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is sent to take over the Earth and the battle between him, Invincible (Steven Yeun), and the hero’s allies is extremely bloody.

The episode has the added benefit of giving fans a “The Walking Dead” reunion, along with something of a reckoning, between Morgan and Yeun. Fans of the zombie apocalypse show will remember that it was Morgan’s Negan who – in what is regularly named as one of the most traumatic episodes in the series – beats Yeun’s Glenn to death with a spiked baseball bat.
