UC San Diego was 20-15 on the year and 13-7 in the Big West, finishing third in the conference but beating UC Davis 75-66 to earn the conference’s automatic bid. Sumayah Sugapong led the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game.
Southern went 20-14 this season and was 15-3 in SWAC play. While the offense struggled, the team was solid defensively, allowing the 33rd-fewest points per game on the season. Aniya Gourdine’s 11.9 points per game led the team.
The winner of this game will advance to play UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
