When a new mom reached out to her family to say she was “struggling,” her own mother’s heartwarming every single day after was captured on their doorbell camera.

The transition to parenthood can often be a jarring one. It’s especially difficult for new moms. In 2018, a survey of first-time moms conducted as part of a study published in the journal Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare highlighted the prevalence of low confidence, high stress and symptoms of depression.

The findings serve as a reminder of the need for new moms to receive assistance and support during that initial period. Tallulah Hering from Leicestershire in the U.K. is the first to admit she needed help.

Hering became a mom for the first time on June 25, following the arrival of her son. “I had a C-section, and I was discharged from the hospital a day after my baby was born, so the recovery was very intense,” she told Newsweek. “My husband has always been an amazing support and an amazing father, however I think we both needed someone else to lean on.”

Hering had always heard the phrase “it takes a village to raise a child,” but it was only at that point that she realized how true it was. “I needed a lot of support, but my husband also needed the support too,” she said.

So a few days after they returned home, Hering reached out to her mom with a simple, honest, admission: she was “struggling.”

The response she got was everything she could have ever hoped for. Within hours, her mom was at their house, ready and willing to help in any way she could.

It wasn’t a one-off either: Hering’s mom made a point of coming every day, until her daughter made it clear she had a handle on things.

“She would come round and help us with washing clothes, doing the dishes, making us lunch, and helping us with the baby in general,” Hering said. “She would even watch him for a couple of hours so we could catch up on some sleep!”

Though it may have seemed to some like Hering’s mom was going above and beyond, to her mom, it was simply part and parcel of family life. “My grandma did the same for my mum when she had me, so she always wanted to do the same,” Hering.

Hering nevertheless felt a deep sense of gratitude for these efforts, so she decided to pay tribute by creating a video for her TikTok, @heyitstallulahx, that collected doorbell camera clips from just a handful of the times her mom came to their door, ready to help over the course of the day ahead.

“I wanted to make a video to show my appreciation,” Hering said. “I don’t know what we would do without her.”

The video struck a chord with many online, amassing over 340,000 views in a matter of days. Though Hering is pleased to see her mom getting the praise she deserves, she hopes viewers also take away the clip’s key message.

“It’s OK to reach out and ask for help,” she said. “There’s so much pressure these days in the media that you have to do everything on your own, but I just don’t think that’s realistic.”
