A dog groomer accepted a new client for an appointment, expecting to see a small Jack Russell terrier mix, but the canine that showed up instead had thrown her for a loop.
Jill Smith of Clearwater, Florida, known on TikTok as @just_me_jillmarie, explained in an August 19 video that she accepted a new doggy client for a bath. The client told Smith that she would be working with a four to five-month-old Jack Russell terrier mix. But Smith began smiling when the dog came in, revealing the surprising truth: it was not a Jack Russell terrier.
In the TikTok video, she flipped the camera around to show a brown and white pit bull sitting on the grooming table. The dog innocently looked up, trying to tell the groomer that it was not her idea.
“As soon as I saw her, I figured that grooming shops had been telling them no because of her breed,” Smith told Newsweek via TikTok. “I just smiled and said she’s definitely a puppy and she’s definitely not a Jack Russell.”
Jack Russell terriers weigh, on average, 13 to 17 pounds and have either smooth coats or rough wired fur, while pit bulls have short, smoother coats.
Plus, pit bulls weigh nearly twice the size of a Jack Russell. Females range between 30 and 60 pounds, while males are a bit bigger at 35 to 70.
But despite the “grooming surprise,” Smith understood the fib. The owner rescued this pit bull and admitted that she called around to other groomers but kept getting rejected because of the dog’s breed.
As a dog rescuer herself, who runs Fido’s Hope senior dog sanctuary, Smith knows firsthand about breed discrimination.
“I’m a strong believer in judge the deed, not the breed,” she said. “And every dog gets a chance, especially a puppy.”
She told the owner her dog was a “good girl,” and they would be welcomed back with her any time.

Some housing complexes have aggressive dog breed restrictions, with pit bulls often appearing on the list. Properties might ban these breeds because of insurance policies, liability concerns or city and county legislation.
Meanwhile, another TikTok user jokingly wrote: “I think his name is just Jack Russell.”
