The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation continues to be up in the air. Though Joe Flacco is the starter, head coach Kevin Stefanski decided to sit the longtime veteran during the beatdown from the Baltimore Ravens.

Rookie Dillon Gabriel got his first regular season action during the fourth quarter, as the Ravens ballooned their lead to 41-10. With Flacco on the bench, Gabriel came in and went 3-for-3, 19 yards, and one touchdown.
Though it was limited action, Gabriel was able to get the offense going enough to score a garbage-time touchdown.

Following the game, Stefanski made it clear that the team is not currently considering a quarterback change, and Flacco would remain the starter. However, a Browns insider has dropped a major prediction on when Gabriel will start, and it could come as soon as the Green Bay Packers showdown.
Browns insider Tony Rizzo was speaking about when the quarterback situation could take a turn, and he believes that it will happen as soon as Week 3. Rizzo stated that if Cleveland is getting blown out by halftime, Stefanksi will make the switch from Flacco to Gabriel.
“Gabriel is going to play, it’s just a matter of when,” Rizzo said. “Tony (Grossi) asked the coaches, and the coaches said ‘We aren’t going to think about that.’ I’m going to tell you if the Browns are getting beat, 10-0 or 14-3 at halftime, I would not be surprised to see coach Stefanksi put in Gabriel.”
Stefanski switching to Gabriel in Week 3 would be a bit surprising, as most pundits and analysts have stated that the switch would likely not come until around Week 5. Still, if the Browns offense remains stagnant under Flacco, it would make sense for Stefanski to make that call.
If Stefanski does choose to put Gabriel in, it would also be interesting to see what he plans to do with the quarterback depth chart following the move. Granted, it would make perfect sense for Flacco to remain the backup, but Shedeur Sanders could find his way higher on the chart instead.
The Browns need to find their quarterback of the future, and if it exists within either rookie signal caller, Stefanski needs to test that out. He can only do so by playing both quarterbacks this season.
Flacco is a veteran, but everyone suspected that he would begin to falter. If he continues to do so, the rookies will have their chance to showcase their skills.
The Browns do have two first-round picks in 2026, and those would be better served building around Gabriel or Sanders. However, both need a chance to showcase they are the quarterback this franchise needs.
