They Were Bored When They Met Online—Five Years Later, Update Melts Hearts

A simple moment of boredom sparked a conversation that would change one couple’s lives forever.

Five years later, their anniversary post on Reddit has gone viral, reminding people that love truly can be found in the most-unexpected places. A woman shared her and her partner’s story in the post, which has received over 21,000 upvotes.

“Met on Reddit five years ago, celebrating our three-year anniversary today!” she wrote. “It’s almost tradition at this point for me to post on this subreddit every year for my anniversary … From an r/[Ask Me Anything] post … to living together for two years and being a couple for three, I couldn’t imagine life with a better person.”

From Boredom to a Beautiful Beginning

The online romance started with a seemingly ordinary conversation. A screenshot from the original subreddit shows the man’s post, which read: “I’m a bored college student looking to talk to people. Ask me absolutely anything.”

The woman replied: “I’m a 19-year-old girl in college who’s also bored right now … what do you plan on doing once you graduate college?” His response was just as unassuming: “I’m not entirely sure right now. Ideally find a job in my major and find a place to live. I know, real generic answer. Haven’t thought too far ahead yet.”

What started as a simple chat between two college students evolved into a long-distance relationship. In the comments section, the woman shared that the couple were friends for two years before they became romantically involved, with him being from the Midwest and her from the Washington, D.C., area.

“It was long distance for about 10 months,” she shared. Once she graduated, she “moved to live with him.”

The Little Things That Matter

When asked what she loves most about her partner, the woman’s answer proved that their bond is built on far more than a simple online connection.

“I would say my favorite thing about him is that his sense of humor is identical to mine and how my family has come to absolutely adore him,” she wrote.

She also highlighted his kind and thoughtful nature.

“The lengths he’ll go to show me how much he cares is also amazing,” she said. “He’ll gift me Lego sets if I’m feeling down and he’s starting learning Korean because I’m half Korean and he wants to be able to converse with my family better. He just has a big heart and it’s beautiful to see.”

A Modern Romance Story

The post received an outpouring of love from other Reddit users who have also found their soul mates on the platform.

“This is such a beautiful reminder that love really can be found in the most unexpected places,” one person commented. “Who would’ve thought a Reddit conversation would turn into years of love, laughter and commitment.”

Other users shared their own Reddit romance stories.

“My boyfriend and I also met on Reddit,” one user wrote. “We have happily been together for a year and a half now! It’s been the absolute best relationship of my life. Moved in together last October. Who knew you could find the love of your life on Reddit?! Congratulations to you both!”

Another shared a unique meeting: “My boyfriend and I met on Reddit almost a year ago … We were arguing in a comment section and eventually realized we were saying the same thing just from different angles. We lived 13 hours away from each other and made trips to see each other several times. We just recently closed the distance and now live together.”

The story is a testament to the hope that in the age of online dating, a seemingly insignificant moment of boredom can lead to a beautiful, lifelong connection.
