A new month and another week of pets that made us fall head over heels.

From a golden retriever rescue always falling asleep with his eyes on his owners to a study revealing which countries own the most dogs per capita—spoiler alert, it is not the United States—pet stories have been the highlight of our days this week. And to top it off are our submissions from Newsweek readers.

Winner

A grandmother submitted her grand-canine’s hysterical way of playing, which captured our hearts this week and won the title of “Pet of the Week.”

Cynthia Hannah’s son, who lives in Western Massachusetts, owns a Boxer named Scout. This older dog cannot get enough of playing with children’s construction toys, specifically the toy bulldozer.

He will run around with it for hours at a time if allowed, barking at it while he pushes. Scout will stop from time to time, ensuring people are watching him. Unaware of his own speed, he’ll crash or tip over the toy.

“If someone is watching and you ask him to push it, turn it around, etc., he will listen and do what you tell him,” she told Newsweek via email. “He does play with other toys, but large sticks are his favorite.”

She said Scout is a “special character” who is smart, loving and a perfect dog for her grandson.

Finalists

Our first finalist for this week is a 12-year-old cat with a shoe obsession, which only emerged recently.

PJ Hahn rescued the black and white cat named Oreo when he was only 11 months old. He was found living under city hall in Sarasota, Florida, Hahn told Newsweek via email. A microchip connected him to an owner, but they no longer wanted him.

“He is now 12 years old, and he has a shoe fetish as seen in the attached picture,” Hahn said.

In the photo, Oreo gravitated toward the footwear at the front door. He “couldn’t resist” and put his paws inside.

The shoe obsession started about three months ago. He’ll cuddle up with all types of shoes, including those belonging to friends who visit Hahn.

Next up is a purebred Chihuahua who beat all the odds stacked against her.

Owner Helen Bright told Newsweek that when Suki was born, she only weighed 60 grams.

“We didn’t think that she would make it,” Bright said. “She proved us wrong, showing with determination you can do anything.”

Suki celebrated her 4th birthday in March. And although she’s still tiny, Suki now weighs 1 kilo, or about 2 pounds.

Last, but not least, we have a dog who couldn’t get enough of her own beauty.

The owner snapped a photo of Mabel, a spaniel, with her paws on top of a stool. She locked eyes with herself in the mirror, frozen in place.

The owner called the masterpiece “Mabel and the Looking Glass.”
