Bears’ Ben Johnson Sends Cryptic Warning Before Vikings Game

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson will be making his regular-season debut when the Bears face the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night, and fireworks could be incoming.

After all, Johnson was lauded for his wizardry as offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. Just imagine what he can do as a head coach?

So, with Johnson set to hit the ground running on a national stage against the Vikings, should we expect a wild play call or two in Week 1?

“We’re still working through all that,” Johnson said with a grin, via Dan Wiederer of The Athletic. “We’ll see what we can cook up.”

Offensive assistant Antwaan Randle El, who was an explosive playmaker in his own right during his NFL playing days, was a bit less cryptic.

“Of course,” Randle El said. “I mean that’s part of this, right?”

Johnson led one of the most dynamic offenses in football last season, and while he certainly had an embarrassment of riches at his disposal in Detroit, it’s not like he doesn’t have similar weapons in Chicago.

D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze comprise one of the league’s most underrated wide receiver duos. Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland are a compelling tandem at tight end. Running back D’Andre Swift struggled during his first season with the Bears, but he has a track record of being quite the versatile weapon, as well.

Then there are pieces like Olamide Zaccheaus and rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III, the latter of whom could represent the perfect gadget player for Johnson.

Naturally, much of Chicago’s offensive success will hinge on the progress of second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, who definitely experienced some growing pains in 2024. But he also flashed some enticing talent, as well. He was the Bears’ No. 1 overall pick last year, after all.

Chicago finished last in the NFC North last season, and the vast majority of people are picking the Bears to finish in the cellar yet again this fall. But perhaps Johnson’s trickery will have something to say about that right off the bat.
