Following WWE’s Clash in Paris and Raw, all the buzz lately has been about retired star AJ Lee potentially returning to the ring. Speculation kicked into overdrive when Becky Lynch attacked CM Punk during the Fatal Fourway match in France.
That carried over into a war of words on the mic, and Becky and Punk cut promos on WWE Raw. Adding to the rumors that Punk’s wife might return to help him were massive chants from the fans in France for AJ Lee.
All of that has led many to believe that when SmackDown occurs in Chicago on Friday, AJ Lee will make her return and receive a major pop. Punk is scheduled to be in his hometown, so it seems to line up.

However, former WWE star Dolph Ziggler recently shared his thoughts on all the buzz involving AJ, with whom he worked closely when he was with the company.
During the Busted Open Podcast, co-host Bully Ray also brought up Punk’s interaction with Rhea Ripley on Raw and asked Ziggler for his take on a potential angle heading towards SmackDown.

Ziggler contended that older WWE fans will know all the lore surrounding AJ Lee, whereas newer fans within the past 10 years might not. Instead, those newer fans would feel that Rhea is an ideal tag partner to help Punk.
“Me knowing it and having those little baby seeds planted yesterday, it’s set up for AJ. But even next week seems kinda soon, but man, with the stars aligning for Chicago, maybe that’s a perfect play,” he said.
Ziggler didn’t stop there, as he suggested WWE should have Rhea come out to the ring “if there’s some situation” and tease that she’s going to beat up Becky “in six months.” From there, Ziggler said Rhea could introduce a “friend,” which would be AJ Lee returning to the ring.
During AJ’s WWE career, she turned heel in 2012 to help Ziggler defeat John Cena in a TLC match. She and Big E began accompanying Ziggler to the ringside, offering support and interference in matches.
Should AJ return to WWE, the speculation is that she’d be a babyface rather than a heel, and team with her husband, Punk, to battle the husband-and-wife team of Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch.
As of this writing, there is no official confirmation that AJ will appear on Friday’s SmackDown in Chicago. However, it would generate a massive pop and plenty of headlines if she did appear to potentially set up a match at Wrestlepalooza on ESPN later this month.
