It’s no secret that Shane Lowry is a big Ryder Cup guy. This is more than evident in the way he talks about and celebrates the event, as well as in his relentless pursuit of a spot on the European team, which he has secured for the past three editions.
It’s no surprise, then, that the biannual event occupies a top spot on his calendar, so much so that he dedicated four powerful words to illustrate what he thinks about his season if he manages to win at Bethpage Black.
“I don’t really care,” Lowry said.

The Irishman spoke about the topic before competing in the Amgen Irish Open, which is being played this week at The K Club. From there, Lowry elaborated on the profound significance of playing in the Ryder Cup.
“If we win the Ryder Cup in a few weeks, I don’t really care what’s gone on the rest of the season. It’s a big thing for me,” he told reporters, according to the transcripts of his pre-tournament presser. “Obviously you go through the whole year and you’re trying to win and trying to play well and you’ve got lots of goals, but a big, big goal for me was win the Ryder Cup this year at Bethpage, and it hasn’t changed.”
“I think, if we’re sitting there in the team room on a Sunday, nobody will care what’s gone on over the last eight months, so, yeah, it’s way up there with me. As I get older, it’s getting even more and more important. I just love to do it.”
Shane Lowry Sees a ‘Better Chance’ For Team Europe
Having participated in two previous Ryder Cups puts Lowry in a privileged position to evaluate the teams, particularly the European team. In his opinion, Team Europe is now in a better situation than it was two years ago, when it won in Italy.
“I feel like we have the same team as last time, and I feel like everybody’s become a better player,” he said, according to the transcripts. “So I think we have a better chance. It’s going to be hard. It’s not as easy as just copy and paste from what we did in Rome because there’s a lot different challenges, and the golf course plays differently …
“But yeah, I feel like our team is very, very accomplished. A lot of the guys are playing well. I’m very excited for Bethpage. I played really well the last few rounds there the last time, but I think it’s going to be a different golf course for the Ryder Cup. It’s probably not going to be playing as physical. It will just be interesting to see.”

At the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy, the European team won the Ryder Cup with a commanding 16.5-11.5 display. Lowry earned 1.5 points in three matches, with one win, one loss, and one draw, the latter against Jordan Spieth in the singles match.
The European team for the 2025 edition will have Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus Hojgaard, Tommy Fleetwood, and Justin Ros, who qualified directly. In addition to Lowry, Sepp Straka, Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg received a free pick from captain Luke Donald.
