The beautiful friendship between a 93-year-old widower and his senior cat has melted hearts online, as internet users can’t get enough of their daily routine.
Sarah Annett, 34, has taken TikTok by storm after capturing the adorable bond between her grandad, Walter Annett, and his cat named Angus. The inseparable duo does everything together, including going out for daily walks around the retirement village where Walter lives.
Each morning, Walter gets out his cart or walker, and Angus hops straight in, ready for that day’s adventure. Sarah, of Tasman, New Zealand, loves seeing the comfort and companionship that Angus provides. She told Newsweek that it is always such a “heartwarming sight.”
Walter and Angus usually go for a wander around the paths and greet everyone they encounter. Indeed, even when the weather isn’t so great, they still go for a stroll inside because the exercise and socialization are so enriching.

“My Poppy loves the company, the fresh air, and the simple joy of having Angus by his side,” Sarah said. “It makes his daily walks more special. They usually head out at the same time, and Angus knows when that time is, so he meows when it gets to 11 a.m.”
Sarah started sharing her grandad’s daily walks with his cat on TikTok (@olive_and_odin) and the videos have delighted social-media users. A clip showing Angus leaping into the cart for that day’s stroll has gone viral with over 545,000 views and more than 69,000 likes at the time of writing.
The daily ritual has proven to be so beneficial for Walter, as Sarah said it provides him with “purpose, movement, and connection.”
Angus came into Walter’s life around 10 years ago, before the grandfather moved into the retirement village. The cat’s previous owners were loving, but it was a chaotic household with young children and other pets. So, Angus started appearing at the house Walter shared with his late wife, and it is believed that he was seeking some peace and quiet.
Gradually, Angus started visiting Walter more often until he “nearly lived there.” Sarah said that the cat’s owners knew he was spending so much time there, and eventually they decided it would be best for Walter to keep Angus and give him the life he deserved.
When Walter moved to the retirement village, of course he took Angus with him, so they could spend every day together.
Sarah said: “I think it shows how special the bond can be between elderly people and their pets. Having a companion brings comfort, routine, and even physical and mental benefits. The walks keep Poppy active and give him a sense of purpose, while Angus gets stimulation and companionship. Their friendship is a reminder of how important connection is for well-being at any age.”
The online response to the videos has been incredibly heartwarming for Sarah to see. She loves showing her grandad all the sweet comments and messages, adding that it “makes his day.”
“We recently lost our nana (his wife), and the comments uplift him for sure,” Sarah said. “The videos make others smile and remind them of the little joys in life.”
With over 730 comments on the viral TikTok video so far, internet users have come out in force to hail the bond between Walter and Angus.
One comment reads: “This just brought me so much joy!”
Another TikTok user wrote: “Angus looks so proud to be carted around.”
A third person added: “NOTHING softens my heart more than seeing an elderly man with his elderly side kick.”
