49ers Receive Bad News on Potential WR Addition

The San Francisco 49ers definitely need help at wide receiver with all of the injuries they are currently dealing with at the position, and they were hoping to get some assistance from a familiar face.

Kendrick Bourne was recently released by the New England Patriots, and the 49ers were immediately interested. Considering that Bourne spent the first four years of his career in San Francisco between 2017 and 2020, the Niners’ interest was hardly surprising.

However, it doesn’t look like a reunion will be occurring.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area has reported that the 49ers made a formal offer to Bourne, but that they were unable to come to terms on an agreement. The veteran receiver will now be visiting with the Washington Commanders.

Bourne went undrafted, but ultimately landed with San Francisco to begin his NFL tenure and experienced a good deal of success with the Niners.

His best season in the Bay came in 2020, when he caught 49 passes for 667 yards and a couple of touchdowns. He then signed with the Patriots that ensuing offseason and enjoyed the best year of his career in 2021, hauling in 55 receptions for 800 yards and five scores.

It has been a struggle ever since for Bourne, who has not achieved 500 yards in any individual campaign afterward and suffered a torn ACL midway through 2023.

Last year, the 30-year-old logged 28 catches for 305 yards and a score in 12 games with New England.

Bourne is certainly not an upper echelon receiver, but he would comprise a solid depth piece for a contender, especially with one a banged up wide receiver room like the 49ers.

San Francisco is waiting for Brandon Aiyuk to make a full recovery from an ACL tear he suffered last season, and Jauan Jennings just returned to practice after battling a calf issue. The Niners also have some other injury issues in their receiving corps, and it’s also important to remember that they traded away Deebo Samuel earlier in the offseason.

The 49ers will open their 2025 campaign against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday.
