The New York Mets may have an ace in their rotation for the foreseeable future.
Rookie right-hander Nolan McLean took the mound Wednesday night for the third time in his MLB career. When he exited, he found himself in New York’s history books alongside the great Tom Seaver.

According to a tweet via Cespedes Family BBQ, McLean joined Seaver as the only two pitchers in Mets history to have 20-plus innings, 15-plus strikeouts and three or fewer earned runs allowed in the first three starts of their careers. Along with that, McLean became the first pitcher in New York’s history to win the first three starts of their career.
McLean joined those history books after a dominant outing Wednesday night against the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies. He went eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six. It capped off an impressive series sweep for the Mets.
McLean has already captivated the attention of his teammates in a fairly short amount of time. Third baseman Mark Vientos spoke about what he’s seen from McLain and the poise and clutch gene he possesses.
“He has ice in his veins,” Vientos stated, via a video posted to X by SNY. “He’s cool when the moments tight and hot. I think that shows a lot about him. It’s an exciting future him and I’m excited to be with him and to be his teammate. It’s fun to watch.”
As nasty as McLean has been over his first three starts, an even nastier arm may be arriving Friday. Top pitching prospect Jonah Tong is scheduled to make his MLB debut against the Miami Marlins.
If Tong is able to replicate anything close to what McLean has done in his short time in the majors, we could be looking at a rotation resembling what Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard did at the beginning of their careers.
Tong and McLean might be a huge part of another deep postseason run in Queens.
