US Mint Launches First Laser-Engraved Coin – Here’s How To Get One

The United States Mint has launched its first-ever laser-engraved coin, the 2025-W Proof Laser Engraved American Silver Eagle, marking a significant innovation in coin production.

Released on August 20, 2025, at noon Eastern Time, the coin is available for purchase at $105, with a household order limit of one, as per Collect Pure.

Newsweek contacted the U.S. Mint for comment via online form on Monday outside of usual working hours.

Why It Matters

Only 100,000 units of the coin have been minted. Given the limited amount, high demand is expected, and the coin may sell out quickly.

By incorporating extremely precise and intricate designs—such as the laser-engraved privy mark—counterfeiters will find it much harder to replicate the coin accurately.

What To Know

The 2025 Laser-Engraved American Eagle One-Ounce Silver Proof Coin is available for purchase through the U.S. Mint’s official website: www.usmint.gov. or through its U.S. Mint sales centers in Philadelphia, Denver, and Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Mint is overseen by the U.S Treasury. Collectors are encouraged to act promptly to secure this limited-edition piece.

The coin has a denomination of $1 and is struck in a proof finish. Composed of 99.9 percent silver, it contains one troy ounce of pure silver and measures 1.598 inches (40.60 mm) in diameter, with a reeded edge, as per Live Mint.

Produced at the West Point Mint, the coin bears the “W” mark and features a distinctive laser-engraved privy mark, highlighting its advanced minting technology and limited-edition status, according to the U.S. Mint.

Key Features:

  • Advanced Minting Technology: The coin is minted using laser-engraved master dies, enabling more detailed designs and improved quality.
  • Unique Privy Mark: A special laser-engraved privy mark, resembling a stylized laser beam, is featured on the obverse side of the coin, as per Coin News.
  • Design Details: The obverse showcases Adolph A. Weinman’s depiction of Liberty, while the reverse features an eagle landing with an oak branch, designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, USA Today reported.
  • Packaging: The coin comes in a satin-lined, black velvet presentation case and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

What People Are Saying

The U.S. Mint on its website: “Introduced in 1986, the popular and now-iconic United States Mint American Eagle Silver Proof Coins are collector versions of the investment-grade American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins. These popular silver collectibles are struck at the United States Mint at West Point and have the “W” mint mark.

“This will be a first-of-its-kind opportunity to purchase a Silver Eagle with the latest technology (laser engraving) used to create master tooling. This coin includes a special laser-engraved privy mark.”

What Happens Next

This coin represents a significant innovation in coin production toward more high-tech security features, similar to those in banknotes, making coins not just collectible, but also more secure against fraud.

It suggests that mints may increasingly adopt advanced engraving, micro-etching, and other technologies to protect both legal tender and collectible coins.
