The NFL Preseason serves as a great opportunity for rookies to get their feet wet in the pros. Unfortunately, New York Giants rookie Cam Skattebo is missing out on a prime opportunity to earn an important role right away.
Lately, Skattebo has been dealing with a hamstring-related setback. As a result, he hasn’t been on the field with the team after a hot start to training camp.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll addressed Skattebo’s absence earlier this month, saying the rookie was taking his recovery “day-by-day.” He added that there has been a “little bit of a setback.”
The Giants don’t seem to be dealing with anything that will cause Skattebo to miss his rookie campaign, but he might get a much later start than desired. According to the New York Giants insider Jordan Raanan, Skattebo could be out when the Giants fire up the 2025 NFL season.

“Probably not going to make it,” Raanan said, regarding Skattebo’s Week 1 availability.

“He’s still sidelined. He’s not working on the side at practice. We don’t see him outside at practice at all,” Raanan said on Breaking Big Blue, via Giants Wire. “Makes you think he’s not that close to returning. Cam Skattebo’s start of the season looks, at the very least, to be in serious jeopardy.”
The Giants selected Skattebo with the 105th pick in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Coming out of Arizona State, Skattebo was one of the most productive players in college last season.

In 13 games, Skattebo took on 293 carries for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also caught 45 passes for 605 yards and three touchdowns. With a strong training camp brewing, it seemed Skattebo was on pace to earn some quality playing time in the New York backfield as a rookie.
However, Skattebo’s recent setback is a major obstacle for him to overcome. Not only do hamstring setbacks tend to linger over time without proper extended rest, but the Giants won’t get a chance to see Skattebo in action until the games count for something. It’s not an ideal scenario for the Giants, but at least Tyrone Tracy, the day-one starter, has remained healthy throughout the summer.
After taking on the New England Patriots this Thursday, the Giants will officially start preparing for their Week 1 matchup against the Washington Commanders, which is set to take place on September 7.
