The Miami Marlins have been rebuilding for the last few years, and their roster is already looking a bit better. Still, they hold onto the most valuable player on the team, pitcher Sandy Alcántara.

Alcántara has been linked to a lot of trade rumors since returning from Tommy John surgery, but the Marlins opted to keep him at the trade deadline.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently predicted the Marlins would finally trade Alcántara during the upcoming offseason after holding onto him at the trade deadline.

“Here’s a fun fact: Alcantara’s FIP prior to Friday night’s gem in Boston was 4.55, exactly the same as what he posted in 2019 when he was named an All-Star for the first time,” Miller wrote. “Granted, that ASG honor was a ‘someone from this 105-loss disaster needs to make the team’ situation, but it was also the beginning of his rise to stardom.

“And the fielder independent data suggests he has pitched equally well this season. ERA sure paints a different story, but at least he has been healthy. Couple that with the notion that his bad luck won’t last forever and Alcantara is a phenomenal buy-low candidate.”

It seems like the Marlins’ idea to keep Alcántara has more to do with allowing him to increase his trade value than it does anything else.

The Marlins will likely cut ties with Alcántara in the coming months, as it would net Miami another solid return of prospects to continue the rebuild in the right direction.

There’s still likely a lot of interest in the talented former Cy Young winner, which the Marlins will look to take advantage of in the offseason.
