Kelsey Plum Breaks Silence After Backlash Over Viral Caitlin Clark Diss

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has been an easy target for her fellow WNBA peers both on and off the court.

Though she hasn’t played a game in over a month while she recovers from a right groin injury, Clark was in the headlines recently for being on the receiving end of a viral diss from Los Angeles Sparks guard Kelsey Plum.

During the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game last month, Plum threw some shade Clark’s way when she called out the reigning Rookie of the Year and the rest of the players on her All-Star roster for not showing up to a players’ meeting in which they decided to wear black shirts with the message “Pay Us What You Owe Us” during warm ups to send a message to the league’s front office regarding their salary demands for the next collective bargaining agreement.

“It was a very powerful moment,” Plum said. “As players, we didn’t know that that was going to happen. It was a genuine surprise. The T-shirt was determined this morning. Not to tattletale: zero members of Team Clark were very present for that.”

New York Liberty guard and fellow All-Star Sabrina Ionescu, who was on Team Clark, joked that Plum didn’t need to point that out, to which she replied: “I’m just trying to make the situation light, OK?”

In the weeks since Plum made those remarks, she’d been ridiculed and called out by throngs of fans on social media who claimed she was jealous of Clark’s star power. But after staying silent on the incident, Plum recently clarified what she really meant by her comments during a recent appearance on Sue Bird’s “Bird’s Eye View” podcast.

“Oh, I made a bad joke,” Plum admitted. “I made a really bad joke. … I honestly was like, ‘Hey, team Clark, they didn’t make it to the meeting either,’ just making a joke, trying to make the room lighter.

“I was making a joke that they were hung over, even though our [Team Collier] nickname was hungover. So I was like, ‘At least we made it.’ Obviously, we were all on the same page, we all wore the shirts, we all were unified.”

Clark was seemingly unbothered by Plum’s remarks, choosing to send a playful jab her way on social media instead after the All-Star Game ended rather than make a big deal out of what happened.

Plum posted a photo on Instagram celebrating All-Star weekend with the caption “What a weekend 🧡🧡🧡.”

Clark responded by commenting “Thank u for the Nike ad,” seemingly making light of the fact that Plum, who signed a multi-year sponsorship deal with Under Armour in November of 2022, happened to be standing in front of a giant Nike logo in her photos.

Clark is one of Nike’s biggest stars.
