The New York Yankees lost Juan Soto to the New York Mets in the offseason. They traded for Cody Bellinger to try and fill the void.

Bellinger has a player option for next season. However, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, he is expected to opt out, and the New York Mets “like” Bellinger and could try and steal him from the Yankees in free agency.

Bellinger has been a great addition to the Yankees, and Heyman noted that his preferred team may be the Yankees. However, he would be foolish not to opt out of his current deal. He has outperformed his $25 million player option.

He has a .270/.325/.491 slash line with 22 home runs. The former National League MVP could hit the most home runs he has in a single season since his 2019 MVP campaign.

Not only has he been exceptional at the plate, but he also provides defensive versatility for Aaron Boone. He can man all three outfield spots while also filling in at first base.

The Mets could be interested in adding an outfielder. They traded for Cedric Mullins at the trade deadline, but he is going to be a free agent after the season. Bellinger could be a long-term piece for the Mets as they hope to compete for a World Series for years to come.

The Yankees may have a leg up in free agency if Bellinger truly wants to stay with the team. He is going to want a better contract, but may take a discount to stay in the Bronx.
