The Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga have been one of the biggest storylines in the NBA over the last month.
As things stand right now, Kuminga is still a restricted free agent. He has yet to sign a new deal with the Warriors and has not signed an offer sheet elsewhere either.
Kuminga does happen to be arguably the best free agent left on the market. Golden State has shown interest in keeping him around moving forward, but Kuminga doesn’t seem to reciprocate that interest. For now, things are in a holding pattern.

Plenty of teams have been connected as potential suitors for Kuminga if he leaves the Warriors. Among those teams are the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, and Chicago Bulls.

With that being said, a new report has come out about Kuminga and his current situation with Golden State.
Anthony Slater of ESPN has reported that Kuminga rather accept his one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer rather than taking the two-year, $45 million with a team option that the Warriors have offered him.
“So, everything sits in the same spot it did 10 days ago,” Slater wrote. “The Warriors have not upped their offer, and Kuminga has indicated to those close to him that the $7.9 million qualifying offer is more appealing to him than the Warriors’ current pitch. Something has to give before the Oct. 1 deadline.”
Over the last couple of years, Kuminga has shown flashes of being an elite talent. However, those flashes have not turned into consistency.
During the 2024-25 NBA season with Golden State, Kuminga played in 47 games and made 10 starts, averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 0.8 steals per game. He also shot 45.4 percent from the floor and 30.5 percent from three-point distance.
At just 22 years old, Kuminga is a very intriguing potential target for teams around the NBA. It’s also obvious that the Warriors would prefer to keep him in town, at least for now.

Whether or not the two sides can work out a deal or some kind of sign-and-trade happens, Kuminga’s future should become more clear before October 1. Fans will simply have to wait and see what happens.
Expect to hear more news and speculation come out about Kuminga in the meantime. His name has become very popular in the NBA rumor mill and the lack of movement between him and Golden State could hint at accepting the qualifying offer or being involved in a sign-and-trade scenario.
