The New York Mets are one of the better teams in baseball, but they still need to make some moves ahead of the trade deadline. While the Mets are reportedly in the market for an outfielder and a starting pitcher, they also need to add to the bullpen.
The Mets’ bullpen isn’t necessarily bad, but they have the money and prospect capital to make a deal at the deadline. There’s a chance the Mets look to land a huge deal in the coming days if they can find a cheap solution to the starting pitching problem.
MLB’s Mark Feinsand recently linked the Mets to a potential blockbuster trade for St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley as the deadline approaches.

“Ryan Helsley is one of the most popular trade targets with no less than a half-dozen teams interested to varying degrees. Among the suitors, per sources, are the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Phillies, Rangers, and Blue Jays,” Feinsand wrote in a post to Twitter/X earlier this week.
The Cardinals are likely looking to cut ties with Helsley before Thursday’s deadline because the star pitcher’s contract expires at the end of the season. With that in mind, the Mets could make sense as a suitor.
The Mets have Edwin Diaz at the backend of their bullpen, and he’s been incredible this year, but a team can never have too much talent in the bullpen. Acquiring Helsley would give the Mets another incredible option to close games in October, helping to limit the workload for both Diaz and Helsley.
It would be an expensive deal to pull off, but the Mets are one of the teams in the league that makes moves like this.
